Stockton, California, is the hometown of noted writers of literature Maxine Hong Kingston (prize-winning author of The Woman Warrior) and Leonard Gardner (author of Fat City). To encourage the growth of the literary community in the area, Delta College has welcomed a number of prominent figures to speak on campus. Maya Angelou (internationally acclaimed author), Janice Mirikitani (poet laureate of San Francisco), Jose Montoya (poet and co-founder of the Royal Chicano Air Force), Gary Soto (poet, novelist, and American Book award recipient), Victor Martinez (winner of the National Book Award), and Victor Villasenor (best-selling author). A number of these presentations have been arranged by the Cultural Awareness Program (CAP) on campus. In 2002, Delta College hosted the International Arthur Miller Conference at which a number of scholars in the field presented papers and discussed the works of this famous playwright. |
